Sudden hearing loss, especially when it occurs within minutes or over the course of a few hours, is considered a medical emergency. Clinically referred to as sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL), this condition involves a rapid decline in inner ear function, typically in one ear. SSNHL may present upon waking, after a loud “pop,” or following what seems like a routine illness, but its onset is often unexpected and unexplained.
Patients frequently mistake the symptoms for simple congestion, earwax buildup, or sinus issues. However, unlike those common conditions, true sudden hearing loss is more serious and can sometimes be accompanied by ringing in the ear, dizziness, or a feeling of fullness. It affects the cochlea or auditory nerve and requires immediate evaluation by an ENT specialist.
If you experience sudden hearing loss, do not wait to see if it improves on its own. Without prompt treatment, the likelihood of permanent hearing impairment increases significantly. Research shows that SSNHL is most responsive to treatment when patients are evaluated within the first 48–72 hours. Delaying care can reduce the chances of recovering full hearing.
