What Is Laryngeal Cancer?
Cancer of the larynx, also known as the voice box, is a fairly common illness that accounts for hundreds of thousands of deaths around the world each year. Those that survive laryngeal cancer often have lifelong detriments to their voice, ability to swallow, and overall quality of life.
What Are the Symptoms of Laryngeal Cancer?
Common signs and symptoms of laryngeal cancer include:
- Progressive or persistent hoarseness of the voice
- Pain or difficulty with swallowing
- Consistently sore throat
- A lump located within the neck
- Difficulty breathing
Who Is at Risk for Laryngeal Cancer?
Even though this form of cancer is rather common, it is also relatively preventable since a very large majority of laryngeal cancer cases occur after prolonged exposure to known carcinogens such as tobacco. Smoking is certainly the largest risk factor associated with laryngeal cancer, but another known contributor is alcohol consumption.
Individuals who often drink alcohol in addition to smoking have a heightened risk of developing laryngeal cancer. It is recommended that only one serving of alcohol should be consumed per day in order to limit its negative impact on a person’s health.
